Vienna: the charming, cultural and green capital of Austria
Vienna may be a familiar city to many because of its many cultural and historical sites. It is also an important city in business terms for many of our clients. I, Jetty ter Haar, Manager Operations at Uniglobe Alliance Travel, have had the opportunity to visit the city several times and find it a wonderful place to be. Reason for me to highlight some things you may not have known about Vienna.
Melting pot of culture and green delight!
The city on the Danube has developed into one of Europe's most important cities both for tourism and business. Vienna is a melting pot of cultures and of works of art of various styles and periods. The Roman excavations, Romanesque churches, the Hofburg, the Ringstraße palaces and Art Nouveau buildings make Vienna a stately charismatic city for me. It is also a very lively city where the Viennese "Gemütlichkeit" can be felt everywhere; in the city's many coffee houses, in a traditional "Heurige" or in the atmospheric Stadtpark.
But did you also know that the Austrian capital was voted the greenest city in the world in 2020? In the ranking 'The World's 10 Greenest Cities 2020′, more than 100 cities were assessed in terms of public parks, the amount of greenery in the city, air quality, environmental friendliness and public transportation, among other things. Wondering where to find all this greenery?
- Danube-Auen National Park: this park is one of the largest natural floodplains of the Danube in Central Europe and is also called the " green lungs" of Vienna.
- Colorful Viennese markets: you can wander around and buy regional cheese, apples, herbs, jams and many more goodies.
- Vienna's most beautiful parks: From Schlosspark Schönnbrunn to the Volksgarten and the Stadtpark: In Schlosspark Schönnbrunn, I spent a whole day enjoying all the sights. Vienna has many public parks where you can have a nice stroll.
- 1,400 km of bike trails: Vienna is ideally suited for exploring by bicycle. You will find 1,400 km of bike paths and several beautiful cycling routes.
- Winemaking in the city: Vienna is the only metropolis in the world to have vineyards within its city limits. Wine is produced on approximately 700ha of land around the city. A visit to Vienna should include a visit to a cozy "Heurigen" where you can taste the wine!
