COVID measures have been lifted, spring sunshine is showing in abundance and the world seems to be at our feet again. However, last month we were literally and unpleasantly overwhelmed by a terrible invasion and now war on European soil. Words fail us and we are deeply concerned with the fate of the Ukrainian people, hoping that a solution to this conflict will soon be found.
For business air travel, this is expected to increase flight changes and cancellations, partly due to airspace closures. We further see that the price of oil is going through the roof. As a result, fuel surcharges are unavoidable. We inform and advise our customers about this to the best of our ability.
With current events in Ukraine in mind, we also want to continue to share travel-related news with you and keep an eye on the path of more sustainable travel together with our partners. In this edition, for example, you can read how we are continuing to give substance to more sustainable (business) travel solutions together with Lufthansa Group.
CSR: Corporate Responsibility at Lufthansa Group
An integral part of Lufthansa's corporate strategy is Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The Lufthansa Group's goal is to operate in a CO2 neutral manner by 2050. Quite an ambition, therefore, to be achieved in part by cooperating with train providers, renewing the fleet and applying sustainable aviation fuel. If you book a flight in our online booking tool UBI, the CO2 emissions of your flight are immediately visible and, if desired, you can compensate these right away. So you can make conscious but also sustainable choices.
Austrian Airlines introduces sustainable jet fuel AND A320neo
To achieve the Lufthansa Group's hefty ambitions regarding the reduction of CO2 emissions, Austrian Airlines will be fueling 1,500 tons of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) starting next month. This will save approximately 3,750 tons of CO2 annually, comparable to CO2 emissions from as many as 333 flights with an Airbus A320 from Vienna to London.
The additional costs for SAF are financed with the support of environmentally conscious passengers through the Lufthansa Group's Compensaid program. Naturally, we wholeheartedly support this CO2-reducing initiative. To boost sustainability, Austrian Airlines has also committed to fleet renewal with the investment in four A320neo aircraft. These will be delivered between August 2022 and spring 2023 and will also be used on the route between Vienna and Amsterdam.
Onboard Delights: healthy snacking for charity
Snacking and supporting a good cause at the same time? It's possible on European Lufthansa flights. All you have to do is buy a so-called 'share bar' at the on-board catering. The 'share bar' is not only a delicious healthy bar that satisfies your appetite, it also supports the Sunshine Project in India. Thanks to this project, Indian children can go to school and are supported until they start working later in life. This way you will have a doubly good feeling about your snack moment!
