What is the difference between Economy Comfort Class and Premium Economy Class?
As a Business Travel Consultant, I, Mariska Ossewaarde, am often asked by business travelers if there is an option for more legroom on the desired flight. Many airlines nowadays offer multiple classes on board. These differ per airline, per type of aircraft and have various designations: Standard Economy Class, Comfort Class/Premium Economy/Economy Plus, Business Class and First Class. And so on.
You may hardly be familiar with them and the differences can sometimes be small, but in other cases are very large. My role is to keep our business travelers well informed! Below I'll tell you all about the difference between Economy Comfort Class and Premium Economy Class. After all, the difference is not only in the name, but actually in the product!
More space with Economy Comfort Class
KLM for example, offers Economy Comfort Class seats (both European, and intercontinental). This Economy Class seat only offers more legroom and is adjustable further back. These seats are located right after the Business Class seats and can be booked for an additional fee. The amount depends on the destination, time of booking and any Frequent Flyer card. The service is otherwise the same as in Economy Class.
The perks of Premium Economy Class
Several airlines offer an intermediate class on their intercontinental flights: Premium Economy Class. This is an "intermediate cabin" that is booked as a separate class on the aircraft. It has a slightly higher price tag, but in return you get more legroom, wider seats and more extensive service. For example, there is a special check-in desk, priority boarding and a higher baggage allowance. There is also often a different menu and a welcome drink on board. In addition, an added benefit is that you earn more miles when Premium Class seats are booked.
Premium Economy Class is a very good solution for the business traveler who is willing to pay a little more for extra comfort, but finds flying Business Class too expensive or is not allowed to fly Business Class because of company policy. Among others, KLM, Singapore Airlines, Air New Zealand. Austrian Airlines, Air Canada, Lufthansa, American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, British Airways and Air France offer Premium Economy Class.
The difference between Economy Comfort Class and Premium Economy Class in brief
- Economy Comfort Class means that the traveler has more legroom, but otherwise uses the service of Economy Class.
- Premium Economy Class means that the traveler has more legroom as well as additional services, such as a welcome drink, customized menu and extra miles.
