Auf Wiedersehen Tegel & Herzlich Wilkommen Berlin Brandenburg Airport!
After years and years of problems and misery, it has finally happened! Berlin Brandenburg Airport, the new airport near Berlin nicknamed BER, finally opened its doors in October 2020! Strict testing procedures have made Berlin Brandenburg Airport one of the safest airports in the world, at least for now. In this blog I, Mariska den Hartogh - Business Travel Consultant, tell you more about Berlin's newest airport.
Location & available airlines
In a way, the corona pandemic has been a blessing for Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt (as the airport is called in full). The low passenger flow - not only in Germany, but internationally - made it possible for the airport to quietly build the new facilities. The new airport replaces the three old Berlin airports and is located on the site of Berlin Schönefeld. The strategically located Tegel Airport, or TXL, closed its doors for good in early November last year and went out like a bedlam. Berlin Tempelhof was already closed in 2008. The location of the new airport is slightly south of the "old Schönefeld," and is about 27 kilometers away from the old city center of the historic city of Berlin. The new airport now consists of 3 terminals and 2 runways. Both large and small airlines fly to "Flughafen Berlin Brandenbrurg," including KLM, Lufthansa, Ryanair and Eurowings.
Getting to and from Berlin Brandenburg Airport by public transport
Brandenburg Airport has 2 train stations, making it easily accessible by public transportation. Several trains run from Terminal 1-2 Bahnhof to the capital. These include the S-Bahn and Intercity trains. There are travel options to/from the airport every 5 to 10 minutes. Buses also run between the airport and the city center; both terminals have a bus station from which city buses depart. Near the exit of the airport is the cab stand. From here you can take a cab, which will take you to the center of Berlin in about 45 minutes.
Comfortable accommodation around Berlin Brandenburg Airport
Near the new airport, there is a wide choice of fine, quality hotels:
- Steigenberger Airport Hotel****. This hotel is just 200 meters from the terminal and a few meters from the train station. Steigenberger features an ideal location, especially if you have to catch an early flight or just arrive in Berlin late at night. The hotel also has a conference center where CO2-neutral events can be held for up to 500 participants.
- Intercity Hotel Berlin- Brandenburg Airport****. The modern Intercity Hotel Berlin-Brandenburg Airport is also about a 5-minute walk from the terminal and S-Bahn station, from where you can easily reach the center of Berlin. This hotel can host conferences and events with a capacity of up to 200 people.
