Tips for traveling with only carry-on luggage
In the business travel world, traveling with only carry-on luggage is very common. The days of airline tickets that include a piece of checked baggage as standard are also a thing of the past. Hold baggage can then be added at a cost. Business travelers therefore often use only carry-on baggage (which is often standard i
ncluded with an airline ticket). We list the advantages and disadvantages of traveling with only carry-on luggage for you and share the applicable carry-on rules for each airline!
The advantages of traveling with only carry-on luggage
- Flying more economically: no extra charges for checked baggage
- Faster check-in: because you do not have to check in hold baggage, you can proceed directly to customs control
- Get to destination faster: no long waiting times for checking in and collecting your hold baggage
- Environmentally friendly: the more luggage carried on board, the more kerosene a plane needs and the more CO2 is emitted
- No lost or delayed luggage: your hand luggage stays by your side for the entire trip ???? Notice: it may well happen that a carry-on trolley still needs to be checked in when too many passengers are traveling with only carry-on luggage. Luggage bins on the aircraft are limited.
The disadvantages of traveling with only carry-on luggage
- Limited options for carrying liquids: you may bring a maximum of 1 liter of liquid, divided into 100ml bottles. In addition, these containers must be brought in a sealable plastic container.
- Limited cabin space for carry-on luggage: it may well happen that there are too many passengers traveling with only carry-on luggage so that there is not enough space in the cabin luggage bins. In this case, carry-on luggage trolleys will also have to be checked in.
How much hand luggage may I bring?
- Maximum hand luggage dimensions: 1 piece of up to 55 x 35 x 25 cm including handles and wheels.
- Maximum hand luggage weight: 12 kg (each), business class 18 kg (each).
- Permitted additional accessories: 1 accessory (such as a small handbag or laptop bag) measuring no more than 40 x 30 x 15 cm.
- Second piece of carry-on luggage (trolley): via upgrade to Premium Comfort Class or Business Class.
- Maximum hand luggage dimensions: 1 piece measuring up to 56 x 35 x 23 cm including handles and wheels.
- Maximum hand luggage weight: no weight limit (except destinations Singapore, Beijing and Shanghai).
- Permitted additional accessories: 1 accessory (such as a small handbag or laptop bag) measuring no more than 40 x 30 x 15 cm.
- Second piece of carry-on luggage (trolley): not possible.
- Maximum hand luggage dimensions: 1 piece of max. 45 x 36 x 20 cm (including handles and wheels) and must be placed under the chair in front of you.
If you book a FLEXI ticket, an Up Front seat or a seat with extra legroom, a large piece of carry-on baggage of max. 56 x 45 x 25 cm, including handles and wheels, is also included.
It is also possible to book a large piece of hand luggage/trolley separately. The cost of this varies per flight between €20.00 and €30.00. Every passenger who books large cabin baggage also enjoys the convenience of Speedy Boarding (priority boarding).

- Second piece of carry-on luggage (trolley): not possible.
- Maximum hand luggage dimensions: 1 small piece of hand luggage is included as standard, measuring up to 40 x 20 x 30 cm. This should fit under the seat in front of you.If you book a TimeFlex ticket, an extra piece of hand luggage of max. 10 kg and 55 x 40 x 20 cm is included,it must be in the luggage compartment to be placed. The TimeFlex fare also includes priority boarding and faster passage at customs control.
- Maximum weight of carry-on luggage: no maximum weight limit with the standard included small piece of hand luggage. An additional piece of hand luggage is subject to a maximum weight of 10kg.

- Maximum weight of carry-on luggage: 23kg
- Permitted additional accessories: 1 accessory (such as a small handbag or laptop bag) measuring no more than 40 x 30 x 15 cm
- Second piece of carry-on luggage: not possible.
- Maximum hand luggage dimensions: 1 piece measuring up to 55 x 40 x 23 cm including handles and wheels.
- Maximum weight of carry-on luggage:
- Permitted additional accessories: 1 accessory (such as a small handbag or laptop bag) not exceeding 40 x 30 x 15 cm (max 4kg).
- Second piece of carry-on luggage: by upgrade to Businessclass.
Traveling with only carry-on luggage can be a real gamechanger for the frequent flyer. It offers speed, convenience and a security that checked baggage sometimes cannot provide.
